The center-north area of Mexico City hides fascinating and history-filled spots, ideal for exploring over a couple of days.
Biblioteca Vasconcelos
Located a couple of steps from the Buenavista metro, this building stands out thanks to its aisles and bookshelves that appear to be floating in the air, creating a modern ambiance that simulates a giant hive. One of the main attractions on the inside is a massive gray whale sculpture, hand-decorated by artist Gabriel Orozco. On the outside, the library is surrounded by a beautiful botanical garden, full of local plants.
Alameda de Santa Maria de la Ribera
This is the main park of one of the most traditional neighborhoods in the capital. At the center of the plaza stands out the Morisco Kiosk, a breathtaking metal sculpture built in the late 19th century. Featuring a design inspired by Arab art, this kiosk traveled to different US fairs before being permanently placed in this park in 1910. Today it is a favored meeting point for locals and visitors and an ideal place to take photos thanks to its colorful details.
Museo Universitario del Chopo
This museum is hosted in a building that catches people's eyes from afar thanks to its huge metallic towers and windows. The iron structure was brought in pieces from Germany more than a century ago, and for a long period it worked as the city's museum of natural history before being left in the care of UNAM. Nowadays, this space takes advantage of its ample rooms to present some of the best modern art, concerts, theater plays, and cinema, establishing itself as an important cultural space accessible to all.
